Meiosis is the type of cell division that produces sex cells. It has two divisions in a row. In the first, homologous chromosomes pair up, exchange segments by crossing over and are then separated, halving the chromosome number. In the second, the two chromatids of each chromosome separate, much as in mitosis. One diploid cell therefore gives rise to four haploid cells, each genetically different.
