How the model is used in teaching
Euglena is a single-celled flagellate of fresh water, often used to show that the line between plant-like and animal-like organisms is not sharp. It carries chloroplasts and makes food by photosynthesis in light, stores carbohydrate as paramylum, and swims with a long flagellum that emerges from the reservoir at the front of the cell.
The stigma, or eyespot, helps the cell turn towards light; the contractile vacuole removes excess water; and the flexible pellicle lets the body change shape. On the model each of these parts is enlarged and numbered, so the teacher can take the class through structure and function in one sequence before students look at slides.
