How the activity is run
Complementary base pairing is the rule that makes DNA copyable: adenine always pairs with thymine and guanine with cytosine. In this kit the rule is built into the pieces, because each base is shaped to fit only its correct partner. A wrong pairing will not connect, so students correct themselves as they work.
- Split the bases, strands and rods between two groups, one DNA segment per group.
- Follow the illustrated instructions to pair each base with the partner it fits.
- Attach the pairs between two strands and mount the segment on its supporting rod and pedestal.
- Compare the two finished segments and read the base sequence along each strand.
