How the model is used in teaching
Alveoli are too small to see without a microscope, so this model enlarges one branch of the bronchial tree to classroom scale. Starting from a bronchiole that no longer has cartilage in its wall, students follow the airway to the terminal bronchiole, into the alveolar duct and finally into the grape-like alveolar sacs.
The capillary network (rete) over the alveolar septa is the key teaching point: oxygen diffuses from the air in the alveolus across a very thin wall into the blood, and carbon dioxide moves the other way. The model helps explain why the large combined surface area and thin walls of the alveoli make the lungs efficient at gas exchange.
