A transverse section of a young dicot root shows a sequence of tissues from the outside in: the epidermis bearing root hairs, a wide cortex of parenchyma, the endodermis with its Casparian strips, the pericycle, and a central stele in which xylem and phloem lie in separate, alternating radial bundles. In a dicot root the xylem bundles are few, commonly two to six, and the pith is small or absent, which helps students tell it apart from a monocot root.
The model gives the class a large, fixed view of this arrangement and helps students trace the path of water from the root hair, across the cortex and endodermis, into the xylem.
