How the model is used in teaching
Each ovarian cycle starts with primary follicles, each an oocyte wrapped in granulosa cells with the zona pellucida forming between them. As a follicle matures, a fluid-filled cavity develops, and at ovulation the mature follicle releases the oocyte towards the fallopian tube. The ruptured follicle then becomes the corpus luteum, which later shrinks to a pale scar, the corpus albicans.
The model lays this whole sequence out on one enlarged ovary, so students can trace a follicle from start to finish rather than piecing it together from separate slides. The sectioned primary follicle shows how the oocyte, zona pellucida and granulosa cells relate, and the attached fallopian tube shows where the released egg travels and where fertilisation normally takes place.
