How to read a vernier caliper

A vernier caliper combines a fixed main scale with a sliding vernier scale. Its least count is the difference between one main scale division and one vernier scale division, or LC = value of one main scale division / number of vernier divisions. With 1 mm main scale divisions, 10 vernier divisions give 0.1 mm and 20 give 0.05 mm.

The reading is the main scale reading just before the vernier zero, plus the number of the vernier line that coincides with a main scale line multiplied by the least count. Any zero error is then removed: true reading = observed reading - zero error.

1. Close the jaws fully and check whether the vernier zero lines up with the main scale zero; note any positive or negative zero error.
2. Open the jaws with the thumb wheel, place the object between the outside jaws (or the inside jaws for a bore) and close gently.
3. Tighten the locking screw so the reading cannot shift.
4. Read the main scale, find the coinciding vernier line and work out the reading with the least count.
5. Correct for zero error and record the result; repeat at different positions and take the mean.

Typical practicals include finding the internal and external diameters of a hollow cylinder to calculate its volume, measuring a sphere or block to work out density, and measuring the depth of a beaker or test tube.
