Concave Mirror

Concave Mirror

Product Code : SCL-LAO-11236

Quick answer: A concave mirror is a converging spherical mirror whose inward-curved reflecting surface brings parallel rays to a principal focus. In the lab it is used to find focal length, form real images on a screen, show a magnified virtual image when the object is inside F and verify the mirror formula. Diameters are 50 mm and 75 mm. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the concave mirror experiment is done

For a spherical mirror the focal length is half the radius of curvature, f = R/2. With the object beyond the centre of curvature C the image is real, inverted and smaller; between C and F it is real, inverted and enlarged; inside F it becomes virtual, upright and magnified, which is why concave mirrors serve as shaving and make-up mirrors.

  1. Face the mirror towards a distant bright object such as a window and move a screen until a sharp image forms; the mirror-to-screen distance is an estimate of f.
  2. Mount the mirror in a holder on an optical bench with an object needle or illuminated object in front of it.
  3. Place the object beyond the estimated focus and locate the real image with a screen or by the no-parallax method.
  4. Record u and v for several positions and calculate f from the mirror formula 1/v + 1/u = 1/f.

Key features

  • Nominal 50 mm and 75 mm diameters for different mirror holders and bench layouts.
  • Converging reflecting surface brings parallel rays to a real focus in front of the mirror.
  • Shows real, inverted images of changing size as well as an upright, magnified virtual image.
  • Supports the distant-object, screen and no-parallax methods for focal length.
  • Reusable teaching component when the reflecting surface is kept clean and dry.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of image does a concave mirror form?

It depends on the object position: beyond the focus the image is real and inverted, while an object inside the focus gives a virtual, upright and magnified image.

How is the focal length of a concave mirror found in the lab?

Roughly by focusing a distant object on a screen, and accurately by measuring object and image distances and applying the mirror formula 1/v + 1/u = 1/f.
