How it is used
A pH meter measures the small voltage produced by a glass electrode, which changes with the hydrogen ion concentration of the solution, and converts it into a pH value. Because the voltage for a given pH shifts a little as the electrode ages, the meter is set against a calibration solution of known pH before use; on this model the adjustment is made on a screw trim pot with the supplied screwdriver.
- Remove the protective cap and extend the electrode.
- Place the electrode in the calibration solution and turn the trim pot with the calibration screwdriver until the display shows the solution's pH.
- Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
- Dip the electrode into the sample, wait for a steady reading and record the pH.
- Rinse again, retract the electrode and refit the cap with its moist sponge.
Keeping a damp sponge in the protective cap stops the glass bulb drying out between uses, which keeps the response fast and prolongs electrode life. The impact-resistant case and splash-proof keypad suit fieldwork such as testing pond water, soil extracts and rainwater.
