How it is used
The pH of a solution depends a little on its temperature, and the electrode's response changes with temperature too, so a reading means more when the temperature is recorded beside it. These testers show both on one dual display, which saves carrying a separate thermometer on field trips and keeps class records complete.
- Switch on and calibrate with one buffer, or with two for better accuracy, using the automatic calibration.
- Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
- Immerse the electrode end in the sample and stir gently.
- Read pH and temperature together once the display is steady.
- Rinse after use; the tester switches itself off after 8 minutes to save the battery.
Being waterproof, the testers suit outdoor work such as monitoring ponds, streams and rainwater, as well as bench practicals on acids, bases and buffers. When the electrode wears out it is replaced on its own, so the tester body stays in service.
