How the Bourdon gauge works
Inside the case is a Bourdon tube, a flattened metal tube bent into an arc and sealed at its free end. When gas under pressure enters through the ribbed tubule, the tube tends to straighten, and a small linkage and gear turn this movement into rotation of the pointer across the dial. The reading is the pressure above that of the surrounding atmosphere, known as gauge pressure; adding atmospheric pressure gives the absolute pressure of the gas.
Through the perspex back students can watch the tube flex and the linkage move as the pressure changes, which makes the working principle clear before the gauge is used as a measuring instrument.
- Stand the gauge on the bench on its cast metal base.
- Connect the ribbed tubule to the apparatus or pump with rubber tubing.
- Apply pressure slowly and watch the mechanism through the perspex back.
- Read the pressure on whichever scale suits the lesson, lb/in² or kg/cm².
