How the cup anemometer is used
Each hemispherical cup has more drag on its open, concave side than on its rounded back, so the wind pushes harder on the cup moving downwind than on the one returning into it. That difference turns the rotor, and its rate of rotation rises roughly in proportion to the wind speed. The simple model has no counter or meter, so the speed is found by counting turns.
- Mark one cup with coloured tape so its revolutions can be counted.
- Measure the radius from the centre of the hub to the centre of a cup.
- Hold or mount the anemometer in the open wind and count revolutions of the marked cup over 30 or 60 seconds with a stopwatch.
- Work out the speed of the cups as 2 pi r N / t, where N is the number of turns in time t.
- Repeat at different places or times of day and compare the results.
The cup speed is lower than the true wind speed, so the result is best used for comparison and for discussing why instruments need calibration, which leads on to the display-type anemometers.
