Sonometer Apparatus

Sonometer Apparatus

Product Code : SCL-HM-11239

Quick answer: A sonometer is a stretched-wire apparatus for studying the transverse vibrations of strings. By changing the vibrating length between bridges and the tension applied through a loading arrangement, students verify the laws of vibrating strings and find resonance with a tuning fork. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

The laws of vibrating strings

A wire stretched between two bridges vibrates in its fundamental mode at a frequency f = (1 / 2l) x sqrt(T / m), where l is the vibrating length, T the tension and m the mass per unit length. This one formula contains three laws. The law of length: at fixed tension, f is inversely proportional to l. The law of tension: for a fixed length, f is proportional to the square root of T. The law of mass: f is inversely proportional to the square root of m.

  1. Place the sonometer on a stable, level bench and check that the wire runs freely over the pulley.
  2. Apply a known tension through the loading arrangement.
  3. Sound a tuning fork, rest its stem on the sonometer and move a bridge until the wire resonates.
  4. Record the resonant length, then repeat with forks of other frequencies to test the law of length (f x l constant).
  5. Keep one fork and vary the load to test the law of tension (sqrt(T) / l constant).

Plotting f against 1/l gives a straight line through the origin, a clear check of the law of length for the practical record.

Key features

  • Demonstrates the laws of vibrating strings: length, tension and mass per unit length.
  • Supports resonance experiments between the stretched wire and a vibration source such as a tuning fork.
  • Allows measurements of vibrating length and applied tension.
  • Connects sound, vibration and stationary-wave theory with visible string motion.
  • Suitable for structured school and college practical work and examinations.

Documentation and supply

Installation instructions and a manual are supplied with the apparatus. Most Lab Exports products carry a one-year manufacturer warranty.

Lab Exports manufactures the sonometer at its works in Laxmi Nagar, Delhi, and supplies it to schools, colleges and universities in India and 60+ countries, handling the export documents for each shipment. More about the company is on the About Lab Exports page.

Frequently asked questions

What does a sonometer measure?

It is used to find the frequency at which a stretched wire vibrates, and so to verify how that frequency depends on vibrating length, tension and mass per unit length.

Which accessories come with the sonometer apparatus?

The supply covers one sonometer assembly. Wire, bridges, mass hanger, slotted masses, tuning forks, paper rider and rubber hammer are confirmed with the quotation, so ask for a component-wise packing list.

What is the price of the sonometer?

Prices are not published on the website. Add the sonometer to the Enquiry Cart with the Add To Cart button on this page, or email [email protected] with the house code SCL-HM-11239 and the quantity, to receive a quotation.

Does Lab Exports manufacture the sonometer?

Yes. Lab Exports manufactures the sonometer at its works at 11/315, Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar, Delhi 110092, under house code SCL-HM-11239.
