How the Ohm's law experiment is done
Ohm's law states that the current through a metallic conductor is proportional to the potential difference across it, provided its temperature stays constant: V = IR. In this apparatus the voltmeter reads the potential difference across the resistor under test and the milliammeter reads the current through it, while the potentiometer raises the voltage in small steps.
- Connect the unknown resistance to its 4 mm sockets, following the circuit diagram printed on the panel.
- Select the supply voltage, 1.5 V, 3 V or 4.5 V, and switch the unit on.
- Turn the potentiometer to raise the voltage in steps, noting the voltmeter and milliammeter readings at each step.
- Switch off between sets of readings so the resistor does not warm up.
- Plot V against I; a straight line through the origin verifies Ohm's law, and its slope gives R.
