How it is used
Flow-based heat experiments need water to pass through the apparatus at a rate that does not change during a reading. Mains or overhead-tank pressure varies, so the Constant Level Tank is placed between the supply and the experiment. Water is fed in slightly faster than it is drawn off; the excess spills down the central overflow tube, so the surface stays at a fixed height and the head driving the outlet flow stays constant.
- Mount the tank above the apparatus it will feed.
- Connect the supply to the inlet, the outlet to the experiment and the overflow tube to a drain.
- Open the supply until water just runs from the overflow.
- Set the outlet flow for the experiment; it then stays steady while readings are taken.
