How it is used
The economy plane covers the standard school experiment on an inclined plane. The glass plate provides a smooth running surface for the iron roller. At an angle theta, the component of the roller's weight W acting down the slope is W sin theta, and a cord over the pulley to a hanging load measures the force needed to hold the roller in place.
Comparing runs on the glass plate with runs on the polished wood shows how friction adds to the force needed, and the scale is used to measure distances along the plane for motion work.
- Set the plane to a chosen angle on the graduated cast aluminium arc and read the angle.
- Place the glass plate and the iron roller on the plane and run a cord from the roller over the pulley to a hanging load.
- Adjust the load until the roller just stays at rest, and record it.
- Repeat at other angles and compare the balancing load with W sin theta.
