An op-amp is a high-gain differential amplifier: its output responds to the difference between the voltages at its non-inverting (+) and inverting (-) inputs. On its own the gain is far too large to control, so almost every practical circuit uses negative feedback. Two simple rules then explain most circuits: with feedback, the two inputs sit at practically the same voltage, and almost no current flows into either input.
Using those rules, students derive the gain of the inverting amplifier (-Rf/Rin) and of the non-inverting amplifier (1 + Rf/Rin), then check them by measurement. The same approach explains the voltage follower, which has unity gain and serves as a buffer, and circuits that add, subtract, integrate or differentiate signals.
