How the third law experiment is done

Newton's third law says that when body A exerts a force on body B, body B exerts a force of equal size and opposite direction on body A. In this apparatus the two carts start at rest, touching, with the spring bumper compressed between them. When the spring is released it pushes on both carts at once and they roll apart in opposite directions.

The two forces are equal and act for the same time, so the carts receive equal and opposite impulses and m1 v1 = m2 v2. With equal masses the carts move off at the same speed and travel equal distances; if one cart is loaded with extra mass it moves off more slowly, and the ratio of the speeds matches the inverse ratio of the masses.

1. Place the two carts on a smooth, level surface with the spring bumper compressed between them.
2. Mark the starting position and release the spring.
3. Measure how far each cart travels in the same time, or note where each one stops.
4. Load one cart with extra mass, repeat, and compare the distances with the mass ratio.
