How the hotplate stirrer is used
A magnetic stirrer turns a magnet beneath the top plate; the field couples to a stir bar dropped into the vessel, so the liquid is mixed with nothing passing through the mouth of the container. On this unit the same plate is also the heater, so a solution can be warmed and mixed in one place during synthesis, dissolution or sample preparation.
Temperature is held by PID control. With an external sensor plugged into the socket, the display shows and controls the actual liquid temperature rather than the plate temperature, which is useful when the set point must be met in the sample itself.
- Stand the unit on a level bench and fix a retort rod in the integral fitting if a probe or clamp is needed.
- Place the vessel centrally on the plate with a stir bar inside.
- Set the stirring speed first, starting low to keep the bar coupled.
- Set the temperature; connect the external sensor if the liquid temperature is to be controlled.
- After use, leave the unit to cool while the hot warning light is on.
