How the metal bosshead is used
The bosshead is the small fitting that turns a plain retort stand into a working support. It has two jaws set at right angles: one slides onto the vertical rod of the stand and the other takes the shank of a clamp, a ring support or a horizontal rod. A screw on each jaw pinches its rod, so the height and the reach of the clamp are set independently and then locked.
Because the jaws are fixed at 90 degrees, the metal bosshead gives the square, predictable set-up that most bench work needs: a burette held vertically over a flask, a funnel above a filter, or a thermometer lowered into a beaker. The die-cast alloy body gives a firm grip once the screws are tightened, and the edges are finished smooth so hands are not caught when the screws are turned.
