How the weight set is used
The denominations are chosen so that any multiple of 10 g up to 1990 g can be made with only a few pieces. To make 370 g, for example, take the 200 g, one 100 g, the 50 g and the 20 g. The set serves as the counterweights on a beam or pan balance, where the unknown sits in one pan and weights are added to the other until the beam is level.
- Place the object in the left pan of the balance.
- Add the largest weight that does not tip the beam, starting with the 1 kg.
- Work down through the smaller weights, removing any that make the beam drop.
- When the beam is level, add up the weights in the pan and return each one to its place in the tray.
Handling the weights with tweezers or gloves rather than bare fingers keeps them clean, and returning each one to its place in the tray shows at a glance if one is missing.
