How a portable autoclave works
A portable autoclave is a pressure vessel in which water is boiled with the lid sealed. Trapped steam raises the pressure inside the drum, and with it the boiling point, so the load is exposed to moist heat at around 121 °C instead of the 100 °C of open boiling. Moist heat at this temperature destroys bacteria, fungi and spores, which is why steam sterilisation is the routine method for culture media and reusable glassware.
The portable single-drum format lets the steriliser be moved between benches or rooms as work requires.
