How the autoclave is used
Inside the sealed chamber, water is heated by the thermostatically controlled element until the steam reaches 121 °C at the working pressure. Saturated steam carries heat into the load much faster than hot dry air, and holding it at temperature for the sterilising period destroys vegetative microbes and spores. The six wing nuts and six locking lugs clamp the removable lid so that it cannot be opened while the chamber is under pressure.
- Lift off the lid and place instruments, glassware, media or waste in the inner liner.
- Refit the lid and tighten the six wing nuts evenly over the locking lugs.
- Switch on and heat; the electronic thermostatic control regulates the chamber at 121 °C during sterilisation.
- After the sterilising period a condensing vacuum is drawn, which helps dry wrapped dressings and drapes.
- Allow the pressure to fall fully before loosening the wing nuts and removing the load.
Because it is suitable for destructive sterilisation, the unit is also used to make contaminated cultures and microbiological waste safe before disposal.
