How the gas autoclave is used
Water in the closed vessel is boiled over the gas flame. Because the rubber gasket and bolted lid keep the steam in, the pressure builds to 15 psi above atmospheric, which raises the boiling point to about 121 °C. Steam at that temperature sterilises the load far more reliably than open boiling at 100 °C.
Heating by gas makes the unit practical in laboratories where electricity is absent or intermittent, since any natural gas line or bottled gas burner can be used.
- Add water to the vessel as described in the instructions and put the instruments, glassware or media inside.
- Seat the lid on the rubber gasket and tighten the bolts and nuts evenly so the joint is airtight.
- Heat on the gas burner and watch the pressure gauge rise to 15 psi; the safety valves vent any excess.
- Hold at pressure for the sterilising time set by the laboratory's procedure, then turn off the gas.
- Wait until the gauge returns to zero before loosening the bolts and opening the lid.
