How the burette set is used
With an ordinary giving set, fluid runs straight from the bag to the patient and the only limit is the clamp. A burette set adds a graduated chamber in between. The chamber is filled from the bag with a measured volume and then shut off from it, so the patient receives only what is in the chamber. Even if the drip runs too fast, no more than that volume can reach the patient, an important safeguard for infants and small children.
Medicines can be added through the injection port and diluted in a known volume. With a 60 drops/ml microdrip, drops per minute equal millilitres per hour, which makes slow paediatric rates easy to set. When the chamber empties, the automatic shut-off valve closes so that air does not enter the line.
- Close the flow regulator, insert the perforator into the bottle or bag and open the air inlet if a rigid bottle is used.
- Fill the burette chamber with the prescribed volume, reading the 1 ml graduations.
- Prime the line until fluid reaches the connector and no air remains in the tubing.
- Connect to the patient's cannula with the Luer lock and set the drop rate with the flow regulator.
- Refill the chamber only when the next volume is due; discard the set after use.
