How the giving set is used
A standard giving set delivers fluid by gravity: the bag hangs above the patient, fluid drips through the drip chamber and runs down the tubing to the cannula. The drip chamber lets the nurse count drops, and with a drop factor of 20 drops per ml the rate is easy to work out: 1,000 ml over 8 hours is about 42 drops per minute.
The roller clamp squeezes the tubing to set that rate and can close it completely. The fluid filter in the drip chamber stops particles from the container reaching the patient, while the bacteriological filter on the air inlet lets air into rigid bottles without letting microbes in. Medicines can be added through the injection site on the line.
- Close the roller clamp, remove the cap and push the perforator into the bag or bottle port.
- Squeeze the drip chamber until it is about half full.
- Open the clamp to prime the tubing, then close it when no air remains.
- Connect the Luer end to the cannula and set the drop rate with the roller clamp.
