How the lancet is used
Many point-of-care tests need only a drop or two of blood: blood glucose, haemoglobin, blood grouping, malaria rapid tests and blood films. A finger prick with a lancet gives that sample in seconds, without a syringe or venepuncture, and is far less distressing for the patient.
The point is tapered on all sides for a quick, clean puncture, and the incision depth of about 2 mm is enough to produce a free-flowing drop from the fingertip. The ribbed surface gives a firm grip. Each lancet is individually packed and sterile, and is used on one patient only.
- Clean the side of the fingertip with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
- Tear open the pack and hold the lancet by the ribbed grip.
- Prick the side of the fingertip with a quick, firm movement.
- Wipe away the first drop and collect the next drop onto the strip, slide or tube.
- Discard the lancet at once into a sharps container.
