How the orifice and mouthpiece experiment is done
Water leaving a sharp-edged orifice keeps contracting for a short distance, so the jet is narrower and a little slower than ideal. Three coefficients describe this: Cc = jet area / orifice area, Cv = actual / ideal velocity, and Cd = Cc x Cv = Qactual / (a sqrt(2 g H)). A free jet follows a parabola, so if it travels x horizontally while falling y, Cv = x / sqrt(4 y H).
Mouthpieces change the picture. A short external mouthpiece lets the jet re-expand and fill the tube, raising Cd above that of a plain orifice, while a Borda's re-entrant mouthpiece gives stronger contraction and a lower Cd. The convergent mouthpiece guides the flow smoothly, so its Cd is usually the highest of the set.
- Fit an orifice or mouthpiece in the universal fixture on the supply tank.
- Set a steady head H with the by-pass valve and note it.
- Measure the discharge over a timed interval.
- Use the X-Y gauge to read the horizontal and vertical coordinates of points on the jet.
- Calculate Cd, Cv and Cc, then repeat at other heads and for each fitting.
