How the notch experiment is done
A notch is an opening in the end plate of a channel that the water spills through, and the head H above its sill fixes the flow. Theory gives Q = (2/3) Cd b sqrt(2g) H^1.5 for a rectangular notch and Q = (8/15) Cd tan(theta/2) sqrt(2g) H^2.5 for a V notch, while a trapezoidal notch combines a rectangular centre with two triangular sides. The experiment finds Cd for each shape by comparing measured with theoretical flow.
- Fit the chosen brass notch at the end of the channel.
- Fill the channel until water just reaches the notch sill and set the hook gauge zero.
- Open the flow control valve, let the level steady and read the head H on the hook gauge.
- Collect water in the measuring tank, timing a known rise on the piezometer with the stop watch.
- Repeat at several flows and for each notch, then calculate Cd.
Plotting log Q against log H gives a straight line whose slope should be close to 1.5 for the rectangular notch and 2.5 for the V notches, a useful check on the readings. Comparing the 45 and 60 degree V notches shows how the notch angle changes the flow at a given head.
