How it is used
The classical Leclanche cell uses a zinc rod and a carbon electrode in ammonium chloride solution, with manganese dioxide in a porous pot as the depolariser. Its EMF is close to 1.5 V, but polarisation makes the voltage fall when current is drawn continuously, and the chemicals need regular attention. The electronic version keeps the nominal 1.5 V while removing the chemicals, the glass jar and the consumable electrodes.
In the potentiometer experiment to compare EMFs, the Electronic Leclanche Cell is used with an electronic Daniell cell: each is balanced in turn against the potentiometer wire, and E1/E2 = l1/l2. The steady output also suits Wheatstone bridge circuits and basic Ohm's law work where a constant low voltage is needed.
