How the melting point experiment is done
The melting range, from the first drop of liquid to the last crystal disappearing, tells a chemist two things: whether the solid is what it is thought to be, by comparison with the literature value, and how pure it is, because impurities both lower the melting point and spread it over a wider range.
Accuracy depends on heating slowly near the melting point, so that the block, thermometer and sample stay at the same temperature. With a manually adjustable rate, the operator can heat quickly at up to 20 °C per minute while far from the melting point and then turn the rate down to 1 or 2 °C per minute for the reading itself.
- Load up to three sealed-end capillary tubes with 2 to 3 mm of dry, powdered sample.
- Place the tubes in the heating block and position the illuminated lens.
- Set a fast heating rate until the temperature is about 15 °C below the expected melting point.
- Reduce the rate to 1 to 2 °C per minute.
- Record the temperatures at which melting begins and ends for each tube.
Running three tubes together lets a student test a crude product, the recrystallised product and a reference sample in one heating run.
