How the melting point is measured
A pure crystalline solid melts sharply, within a narrow range of a degree or two, while impurities lower the melting point and widen the range. Measuring the melting point is therefore a quick test of identity and purity, for example to check a product after recrystallisation.
The capillary is used sealed at one end. Only a short column of finely powdered sample is needed, packed down to the sealed end so it heats evenly, and the tube is then placed in the heating block of the melting point apparatus beside the thermometer or sensor.
- If the tube is open at both ends, seal one end in a small flame and let it cool.
- Press the open end into the powdered sample and tap the tube so the solid falls to the sealed end, forming a column of 2 to 3 mm.
- Place the tube in the heating block of the melting point apparatus.
- Heat quickly to about 10 to 15 deg C below the expected melting point, then slowly, and record the temperatures at which melting starts and finishes.
