How the model is used in teaching
Pheretima posthuma is the common earthworm studied in school and college zoology, and its dissection is a standard practical for the phylum Annelida. The body is divided into many ring-like segments, with a thickened band, the clitellum, that plays a part in forming the cocoon. Inside, the gut runs from mouth to anus, a closed system of blood vessels carries blood, and a ventral nerve cord links the segments.
The model shows the undissected surface and the opened body side by side, so students can link each external region to the organs beneath. Because the earthworm is hermaphrodite, the reproductive organs of both sexes appear in the dissected part, which is often the hardest region to follow in a real specimen.
- Examine the external portion and note the segments and the clitellum.
- Move to the dissected portion and trace the digestive tract from front to back.
- Locate the main blood vessels and the nerve cord.
- Use the numbers and key card to name the reproductive organs.
