How the model is used in teaching
The shoulder (glenohumeral) joint is a ball-and-socket joint in which the rounded head of the humerus sits in the shallow glenoid cavity of the scapula. The shallow socket gives the shoulder the widest range of movement of any joint in the body, but it also makes the shoulder the most commonly dislocated major joint, which is why its ligaments and surrounding muscles matter so much.
With the model, a teacher can move the humerus through each movement in turn: abduction raises the arm away from the side, adduction brings it back, anteversion swings it forward, retroversion swings it backward, and internal and external rotation turn it about its long axis. The flexible ligament shows how soft tissue holds the joint together while allowing this motion.
