How the model is used in teaching
A fetal skull differs from an adult skull in several ways. Its cranial bones are thin and not yet fused; they are separated by membranous sutures and by soft areas called fontanelles, the largest being the anterior fontanelle. This allows the bones to overlap slightly during birth and lets the brain keep growing afterwards. The face is small in proportion to the cranium, and the jaws have no erupted teeth.
The model is used to compare fetal and adult skulls, to teach how the skull bones develop and fuse, and in midwifery and obstetrics lessons on the fetal head. The spring-hinged mandible opens to show the bone structures of the mouth.
