How the model is used in teaching
The elbow is really three joints within one capsule. The humerus meets the ulna in a hinge joint that allows bending (flexion) and straightening (extension); the humerus also meets the radius; and the radius and ulna meet each other at the proximal radioulnar joint, where the head of the radius rotates within a ring of ligament.
That rotation turns the palm down (pronation) and up (supination). On the model, students can bend and straighten the joint and then rotate the radius to see that the two movements are independent. The flexible artificial ligaments show how soft tissue keeps the joint stable while it moves.
