How the model is used in teaching
The human hand has 27 bones: eight carpals in the wrist, five metacarpals in the palm and fourteen phalanges in the fingers and thumb. They meet at the wrist, carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal (knuckle) and interphalangeal joints, which together give the grip, pinch and fine finger control that make the hand so useful. A life-size model lets students relate each joint to their own hand.
Standing on its base, the model can be set on the demonstration bench and turned so that the class sees the palm side and the back of the hand in turn.
