How the model is used in teaching
Each spinal nerve is formed where an anterior (ventral) root, which carries motor fibres out of the cord, joins a posterior (dorsal) root, which carries sensory fibres in. Enlarged six times, the upper thoracic segment on this model shows both roots exposed and in contrasting colours, large enough to point out across a classroom.
Because the two root types are colour coded, the model works well in lessons on the reflex arc and on the difference between sensory and motor pathways.
