How the model is used in teaching
The inside of the stomach is lined with gastric mucosa raised into folds (rugae), which allow the organ to expand after a meal. This model shows the stomach in its distended state and in longitudinal section, so students see the shape of the organ when full as well as its lining.
At the upper end, the transitional mucosa marks the change from the lining of the oesophagus to the lining of the stomach. At the lower end, the thickened pyloric sphincter muscles and the pyloric valve control the release of chyme into the duodenum in small amounts, which gives digestion in the stomach time to continue.
