How the model is used in teaching
The heart is a double pump: the right side sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs and the left side sends oxygenated blood around the body. On this model the outer surface shows the atria with their auricles, the coronary sulcus and the coronary vessels that feed the heart muscle, while the pulmonary vessels, aorta and vena cava show how the heart connects to the two circulations.
Removing the anterior wall reveals where the superior and inferior vena cava enter the right atrium and brings the tricuspid, mitral and aortic valves into view. Because the valves are flexible, a teacher can show how they close to stop blood flowing backwards.
- Identify the atria, auricles, coronary sulcus and coronary vessels on the outside of the heart.
- Locate the aorta, vena cava, pulmonary vessels and the segments of trachea and oesophagus.
- Remove the anterior wall and trace blood from the vena cava through the right atrium and tricuspid valve.
- Follow the route to the lungs and back to the left side, through the mitral valve and out past the aortic valve.
