How it is used
A cover slip is placed over the specimen after it has been mounted in a drop of water, stain or mounting medium. It spreads the liquid into a thin, even film, so the whole field lies at one depth and can be brought into sharp focus, and it stops the objective lens from touching the liquid. For a permanent slide the cover slip is fixed in place with a mounting medium that sets.
- Place the specimen in a drop of water or stain in the centre of a clean slide.
- Hold the cover slip at an angle of about 45 degrees with one edge touching the drop.
- Lower it slowly with a needle so the liquid spreads out and air bubbles are pushed aside.
- Blot any excess liquid from the edges with filter paper before viewing.
Cover slips are thin and break easily, so they are best handled by the edges, cleaned before use and stored flat in their box.
