How the series ohmmeter works
In a series-type ohmmeter the internal DC source, a limiting resistor, a zero-adjust resistance and the meter movement form one loop with the test terminals. When the terminals are shorted, the zero-adjust control is set so that the meter reads full scale, marked 0 ohm. Connecting an unknown resistance Rx raises the total loop resistance, so the current and the deflection fall: I = E / (Rint + Rx).
Because deflection falls as resistance rises, the scale reads from right to left and is crowded at the high-resistance end. The mid-scale reading equals the internal resistance of the ohmmeter, a useful point for students to check with a known resistor.

- Short the test leads together and set the zero-adjust control for full-scale deflection.
- Separate the leads and confirm that the pointer returns to the infinity mark.
