Experiments on elasticity, surface tension and viscosity
The Searle's pattern and vernier type apparatus find Young's modulus of a wire by loading it and reading its extension against a reference wire. The Hooke's law apparatus plots the extension of a spring against load to show proportionality and find the spring constant. The Searle's pattern rigidity apparatus finds the modulus of rigidity of a wire joining two suspended brass rods, and the rubber tube apparatus gives Poisson's ratio from the change in length and volume of a stretched rubber tube.
For surface tension, water rises to different heights in the four capillary tubes, and the rising table sets the liquid level under them. Quincke's apparatus is used to find the surface tension of mercury, and Searle's balance measures it for a soap film or any transparent liquid. Viscosity is found by timing steel balls falling through the long tube by Stokes' method, or with Searle's viscometer for very viscous liquids.
