Teaching with skeleton and joint models

A life-size articulated skeleton is the reference for the skeletal system chapter in school biology: students locate the skull, rib cage, vertebral column, girdles and limb bones on it, and the joint models show the difference between ball-and-socket joints such as the shoulder and hip and hinge joints such as the elbow. The mini and small skeletons suit desk work in groups.

In nursing and medical osteology, the disarticulated skeleton lets students handle one bone at a time, and the skull models separate into parts to show the cranial cavity. The painted skeletons mark muscle origins and insertions or the course of arteries and nerves. What decides the price of a human skeleton model?

Size, material and finish. A 170 cm PVC skeleton, an 85 cm painted skeleton, a 46 cm mini skeleton and a 30 cm plastic skeleton are quoted differently, as are painted versions and the choice of stand. How do the economy, superior and PVC skeletons differ?

The economy and superior skeletons are both life-size and articulated, made from clay and fibreglass; the superior model adds the option of a 3-part skull. Which joint models show movement?

The shoulder, elbow and hip joint models have flexible artificial ligaments so the joint can be moved through its range. The functional elbow model adds flexible biceps and triceps to show how the two muscles work against each other.
