Turbine and pump experiments

On the turbine set-ups, students load the runner with a rope brake dynamometer, measure speed, head and discharge, and plot brake power and efficiency to compare an impulse turbine (Pelton) with reaction turbines (Francis and Kaplan). The pump rigs are used to draw head-discharge, power and efficiency curves: the centrifugal rig reads delivery pressure and suction vacuum on separate gauges and input power on an energy meter, and the multi-stage rig runs two 1 HP pumps on a DC drive with a digital RPM indicator.

Positive-displacement machines are covered by the reciprocating and gear pump set-ups, whose drives can run at three fixed speeds on a step cone pulley or at variable speed on a DC motor. The jet and submersible pump rigs complete the pump study, and the hydraulic ram set-up measures useful and waste water in two separate tanks to calculate ram efficiency.

Rig and turbine details

The Centrifugal Pump Test Rig (EL-HML-11053) is a closed-circuit unit with stainless steel tanks and a powder-coated finish; discharge is measured in a 400 x 400 x 400 mm tank or by a water flow meter, and the rig needs a 440 V, 15 A three-phase supply and about 2 m x 2 m of floor. The Kaplan Turbine Test Setup (EL-HML-11052) is offered with a 200 mm or 300 mm rope brake drum and a 300 or 600 litre sump, matched to its output rating.

Most Lab Exports products carry a one-year manufacturer warranty. Installation instructions and manuals are supplied, and calibration certificates traceable to national standards are available on request for select engineering apparatus.

Which turbine sizes can be ordered?

The Pelton wheel set-up is listed in 1 kW, 1.5 kW and 3.75 kW ratings, the Kaplan in 1 kW and 3.75 kW, and the Francis in versions up to 3.75 kW. Each size comes with its own sump tank and three-phase circulation pump.

Which pumps can be tested?

Six pump types have their own rigs: single-stage centrifugal, multi-stage centrifugal, reciprocating, gear, jet and submersible, each built around a 1 HP pump with tanks for flow measurement.

What does the hydraulic ram set-up include?

A 50 x 15 mm ram with a stainless steel air vessel, a 50 mm delivery line 6 m long, a supply tank and an overhead tank, two stainless steel measuring tanks with piezometer scales, and a Bourdon pressure gauge.
