Where lab meters are used

Ammeters and voltmeters are connected in series and in parallel with a resistance to verify Ohm's law, and the galvanometer serves as the null detector for meter bridge and potentiometer experiments. The tangent galvanometer is used to verify the tangent law and find its reduction factor, and the ballistic galvanometer measures the charge carried by a short pulse of current, for example when a capacitor discharges through it. The spot-reflecting galvanometer detects very small currents, with its sensitivity set by a range switch.

Demonstration meters have large scales so a whole class can read one instrument during a teacher's demonstration, while panel and portable meters suit student benches and fixed set-ups. The ohm meter and the digital desk meters give direct readings for quick checks of resistance, current and voltage.

Specification examples

The Ballistic Galvanometer (EL-LM-10391) is listed in two versions: a 100 ohm coil with a charge sensitivity of 300 mm per microcoulomb and a critical damping resistance of 2000 ohms, and a 500 ohm coil with 600 mm per microcoulomb and 3500 ohms, both with a 12 second period. The Galvanometer EDSPOT (EL-LM-10390) has front scales of 0-18 cm and 9-0-9 cm in millimetres, sensitivity steps of x1, x0.1, x0.01 and x0.001, lock, zero and sensitivity controls, and colour-coded 4 mm sockets.

How accurate are the analog meters?

The ammeter, voltmeter, galvanometer and panel meters are stated at plus or minus 2% of full-scale deflection, the portable meter at plus or minus 1%, and the horizontal and interscale demonstration meters at plus or minus 2.5%.

What is the difference between the tangent, ballistic and spot-reflecting galvanometers?

The tangent galvanometer measures steady current from the deflection of a magnetic needle at the centre of its coils. The ballistic galvanometer has a long period so it can measure the charge in a brief pulse. The spot-reflecting galvanometer reads a light spot on a scale, which makes very small deflections visible.

Which meters are meant for classroom demonstration?
