Theory of machines experiments

For dynamics of machinery, students balance rotating masses statically and dynamically, measure gyroscopic couple and precession, plot governor lift against speed for Hartnell, Porter and Proell governors, and find the whirling speed of shafts with fixed and free ends. Kinematics work covers follower displacement for three cam profiles, involute tooth generation with a rack cutter, gear interference and undercutting, the Coriolis component of acceleration and the holding torque of an epicyclic gear train.

The vibration set covers simple and compound pendulums, bifilar suspension, spring-mass systems, single and two-rotor torsional vibration, damped vibration and verification of Dunkerley's rule. Other experiments measure belt slip and creep for three belt materials, pressure distribution around and along a journal bearing, pressure gauge calibration with dead weights, and cutting forces in turning, milling, drilling and grinding.

Apparatus specifications

The Journal Bearing Apparatus (EL-TOML-11030) runs a 50 mm journal in a 55 mm bearing on a DC shunt motor up to 3,000 RPM in either direction, loads it with four adjustable weights and reads pressure on a 16-tube manometer panel. The Whirling of Shaft Apparatus (EL-TOML-11022) has two shafts of each of three diameters, a 1/8 HP motor with Variac speed control, and needs a 230 V, 15 A supply and 2 m x 1 m of floor space. Which tool dynamometers are available?

Four machine-specific units: a milling dynamometer reading up to 500 kg in each direction on a three-channel indicator, a grinder dynamometer up to 200 kg on two channels, a lathe dynamometer that fits the cross slide and reads vertical and horizontal forces, and a drilling dynamometer for thrust and torque. The drilling unit is factory calibrated with a proving ring and reads directly in kg.

Which governors does the governor apparatus test?

It carries Hartnell, Porter and Proell governor assemblies, one of each, driven by a variable-speed DC motor. Sliding weights are supplied for the Porter and Proell governors, a spring with a compression adjustment is fitted, and lift is read on a scale and pointer.

What does the vibration lab include?

It is built on a channel-section frame with set-ups for pendulum, longitudinal, torsional and damped vibration experiments, driven by a motor with a control unit and a strip chart recorder, and it is supplied with a technical manual.
