Tuning Fork Set of 8 – Welch

Tuning Fork Set of 8 – Welch

Product Code : SCL-EAE-11123

Quick answer: The Tuning Fork Set of 8 (Welch type) gives a class eight forks for sound and vibration experiments. Struck gently, each fork vibrates at its own characteristic frequency, so students can compare pitch, study resonance with an air column or resonance box, and hear beats between forks of close frequency. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the tuning forks are used

A tuning fork is struck on a rubber pad and its two prongs vibrate in and out at a fixed natural frequency, setting up sound waves in the air. Because each fork in the set has its own frequency, students can hear that a higher frequency gives a higher pitch, and can relate frequency, wavelength and the speed of sound through v = f x lambda.

In a resonance-tube experiment a vibrating fork is held over an air column whose length is changed until the sound is loudest; the first resonance occurs when the column is about a quarter of a wavelength long, which lets the speed of sound be estimated. Two forks of slightly different frequency sounded together give beats, a regular rise and fall in loudness at a rate equal to the difference of their frequencies.

  1. Choose the fork needed for the experiment and hold it by the stem, not the prongs.
  2. Strike one prong gently on a rubber pad or with a soft striker, never on a hard bench.
  3. Hold the vibrating prongs near the ear, or over the resonance tube or box being used.
  4. Touch the prongs lightly to stop the vibration before changing forks.

Key features

  • Eight tuning forks in one set for comparing several frequencies.
  • Welch-type forks for classroom sound and vibration work.
  • Each fork gives a steady tone at its own characteristic frequency.
  • Suits resonance experiments with air columns, tubes or resonance boxes.
  • Useful for demonstrating beats with two forks of close frequency.

Frequently asked questions

How many tuning forks are in the Welch set?

The set contains eight tuning forks, each with its own characteristic frequency.

How are beats produced with tuning forks?

Sound two forks of slightly different frequency together; the loudness rises and falls, and the number of beats per second equals the difference between the two frequencies.

How should a tuning fork be struck?

Strike a prong gently against a rubber pad or with a soft striker and hold the fork by its stem. Striking a hard surface can damage the prongs and change the frequency.

What is the price of the tuning fork set of 8?

Prices are not published on the website. Add the tuning fork set of 8 to the Enquiry Cart with the Add To Cart button on this page, or email [email protected] with the house code SCL-EAE-11123 and the quantity, to receive a quotation.
