How the op-amp experiments are done
An operational amplifier amplifies the difference between its two inputs with a very high open-loop gain. In practical circuits, negative feedback from the output to the inverting input sets a precise gain that depends only on the external resistors. For the inverting amplifier the gain is -Rf/Rin, so with Rin = 10 k ohm and Rf = 100 k ohm the output is ten times the input and inverted in phase; for the non-inverting amplifier the gain is 1 + Rf/Rin.
- With the trainer off, study the front-panel diagram to identify the inputs, output and supply points.
- Patch the chosen circuit, for example an inverting amplifier with a 10 k ohm input resistor and 100 k ohm feedback resistor.
- Apply a small input signal and switch on.
- Measure the input and output with a multimeter or oscilloscope and calculate the gain.
- Compare the measured gain with -Rf/Rin, then re-patch for the next circuit.
