How it is used
The two shapes teach different ideas. An equilateral prism refracts light at both faces and, because the refractive index of glass is greater for violet than for red, spreads white light into a spectrum; it is also the standard prism for finding the refractive index of glass from the angle of minimum deviation. A right-angle prism is used for total internal reflection: light entering one short face meets the hypotenuse at 45 degrees, beyond the critical angle of glass of about 42 degrees, and is turned through 90 degrees, or through 180 degrees when it enters by the hypotenuse face.
- For dispersion, direct a narrow beam of sunlight or lamp light at one face of the equilateral prism and catch the spectrum on a white screen.
- For refractive index, trace rays through the prism by the pin method, find the minimum deviation Dm and use mu = sin((A + Dm)/2) / sin(A/2) with A = 60 degrees.
- For total internal reflection, send a ray normally into a short face of the right-angle prism and watch it leave the other short face turned through 90 degrees.
- Turn the right-angle prism so that light enters the hypotenuse and observe the ray sent back through 180 degrees, as in binoculars and periscopes.
